F. Reese, Sr. FUNERAL RITES FOR CONFEDERATE SOLDIER Funeral services for Emmett Francis Reese, who died November 1, in his 91st year, were conducted from the family plot in the cemetery at Sebrell last Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. A.W. Roten, assisted by Rev. H.F. Turner of Alberta, Rev. Dr. Wall of Emporia, Rev. J.E. Brooks of Deep Creek and Rev. J. Sutherland-Watt of Franklin. In the presence of a large assemblage of friends, and with the casket covered by the beloved battle flag of Urquhart-Gillette Camp of Confederate Veterans, this good citizen and gallant soldier of the Confederacy was laid to rest, dressed in the faded gray uniform which had meant so much to him since the brave days of 1861-’65. Besides the ministers participating, John N. Sebrell of Norfolk, a kinsman and close friend, made appropriate remarks at the graveside. In accordance with his own request the poem, "The Little Bronze Cross," and the hymn "Now We Leave Thy Servant Sleeping," were read and taps were sounded by E. Lee Petterson of the Franklin Boy Scout troop. The active pallbearers were: Dr. E.F Reese, R.R. Reese, G.W. Reese, T.E. Reese, Dr. W.A. Reese, W.T. Rowland, L.M. Cobb, Jr. and J.F. Sledge. The honorary pallbearers were selected from a large list of his friends, headed by L.L. Manry of Courtland and Geo. W. Barnes of Franklin, two of the three surviving members of Urquhart-Gillette Camp Confederate Veterans. Mr. Reese was born March 5, 1844, in Southampton County near Old Peet’s Church, the son of the late Edwin T. and Mrs. Louisa Rowland Reese of this county. He volunteered in the Confederate Army in 1861 at the age of 17, and served throughout the war in Company G, 61st Virginia Regiment, Mahone’s Brigade. In early life he affiliated with the Methodist Church and was a faithful and consistent member until death, serving for many years as a steward and in other responsible capacities in his church. He was an estimable, honored and upright man, a leader in his church and community, one of that sturdy race of men who labored honorably and successfully to rebuild the war-worn and stricken South after the surrender at Appomattox. On April 17, 1873, he married Miss Virginia Mary Bishop, daughter of Dr. John L. and Caroline Sebrell Bishop of Southampton County. To this union were born 12 children. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Dr. E.F. Reese and G.W. Reese of Courtland, R.R. Reese and L.T. Reese of Sebrell, Mrs. L.M. Cobb, Misses Berta, Rena, and Eugenia Reese of Sebrell and Mrs. L.J. Sledge of Emporia; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren besides several nieces and nephews.
