REESE, JR., PHYSICIAN, DIES IN SOUTHAMPTON COURTLAND - Sept. 26 - Dr. Emmett Francis Reese Jr., 82, a physician here for 60 years, died Friday night at his home. Dr. Reese had practiced medicine in Southampton county since his graduation in 1899 from the Medical School that is now the Medical College of Virginia. He bought the Reese Drug Store in 1904 and was active in its management until his death. He also was co-owner of Reese Motor Co. Dr. Reese was senior warden of the vestry at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He was a member and past president of Courtland Ruritan Club, a Mason and a member of the Tri-County Medical Society. Surviving are a son, Dr. E.F. Reese III of Courtland; three brothers, Robert R. and Lewis R. Reese of Sebrell and George Walter Reese of Richmond and four sisters, Mrs. L.M. Cobb of Greensboro, N.C., the Misses Bertha and Jean Reese of Sebrell and Mrs. Margaret Sledge of Emporia. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 Monday in Riverside Cemetery here. ****************************************************************************** DR. EMMETT FRANCIS REESE, JR. DR. E.F. REESE, JR., PROMINENT COUNTY PHYSICIAN FOR 59 YEARS, DIED IN SLEEP Funeral Services Today In Courtland COURTLAND - Dr. Emmett Francis Reese, Jr., born Sept. 18, 1877 in Southampton County where he was a practicing physician in this area for 59 years, died in his sleep Friday night, Sept. 25, at his residence here. He was 82 ten days ago. Funeral services were conducted today (Monday) at the grave in Riverside Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. by Bishop William A. Brown, retired bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, and the Rev. Robert E. Davis, rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Pallbearers were Morris Abernathy of Richmond, Charles F. Urquhart, Jr., Beamon Davis, E. L. Marks, 3rd, John W. Rollison, Jr., John C. Boothe, L.A. Clements and Milton T. Futrell. Honorary pallbearers were member of the Tri-County Medical Society. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Lynie Ridley Reese and a son of Emmett Francis and Mrs. Virginia Mary Bishop Reese. Dr. Reese attended the University College of Virginia, now the Medical College of Virginia, and was graduated in 1899. In addition to his long medical career he was engaged in other business, church and fraternal activities. He purchased the Reese Drug Store in 1904 and has been active in its operation during the years. He was also co-owner of Reese Motor Co., and at the time of death was the oldest active automotive dealer in the state. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and senior warden of its vestry. He was a member of the Courtland Ruritan Club and a past president, a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Tri-County Medical Society, and also was on the staff of Raiford Memorial Hospital, Franklin. He is survived by one son, Dr. E.F. Reese, III, of Courtland; three brothers, Robert R. Reese and Lewis R. Reese, both of Sebrell and George Walter Reese of Richmond; four sisters, Mrs. L.M. Cobb of Greesboro, N.C.; Misses Berta and Jean Reese, both of Sebrell, and Mrs. Margaret Sledge of Emporia, and nieces and nephews.
