MARY JANE BRITT RICKS

DEATH OF MRS. MARY RICKS

   Mrs. Mary Ricks, the widow of the late E.R. Ricks, and one of the oldest 
citizens of her community, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.A. 
Thompson, Courtland, Va., Wednesday morning at about 11 o'clock.

   The deceased was a good and true wife and mother and an ever faithful 
Christian worker who possessed a wide circle of friends and neighbors.

   Mrs. Ricks, the daughter of Lemuel Britt, was born in Hertford county, 
N.C., and moved in later years to Virginia.  She was married to Edward Ricks 
in July 1865, who died February 16, 1920.

   The deceased leaves to mourn their loss six sons, Reuben, Crocket, Thomas 
and Roy Ricks of Drewryville, Herbert Ricks of Newport News and Willie Ricks 
of Capron; five daughters, Mrs. J.A. Thompson of Courtland, Mrs. Joe Newton of 
Branchville, Mrs. M.J. Panton of Franklin, Mrs. J.N. Johnson of Norfolk and 
Mrs. S.C. Cooke of Kenbridge; two sisters, Mrs. Pattie Odom of Murfreesboro, 
N.C. and Mrs. Sallie Overby of Baltimore, beside a number of nieces, nephews 
and grandchildren.

   The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock in 
Branchville cemetery in the presence of a large number of sorrowing friends. 
The pallbearers were Messrs. Jeff Woodard, John Harris, Luther Hasty, Wilmer 
Barnes, Luttie Applewhite, John Darden and Ed. Davis.
