Rakestraw, 50, of Portsmouth died Thursday at a Richmond hospital. He is survived by wife, Sara C. Rakestraw; a son James W. Rakestraw Jr. of Portsmouth, and a sister, Mrs. C.R. Julian of Richmond. Funeral arrangements were incomplete last night. ****************************************************************************** JAMES WILLIAM RAKESTRAW FRANKLIN, Oct. 17 - A funeral service for James William Rakestraw, 50, who died Thursday, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Holland Funeral Home, with burial in Poplar Spring Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** JAMES WILLIAM RAKESTRAW FRANKLIN - James William Rakestraw, 50, of Portsmouth, formerly of Wentworth, N.C., died Thursday night in a Richmond hospital after a long illness. He was the son of the late John Waldin and Mrs. Luccinda Carter Rakestraw of Rockingham County, N.C., and was a member of the Congregational Christian Church of Portsmouth. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sara Cobb Rakestraw, of Portsmouth; one son, James W. Rakdstraw, Jr., of Blackburg; two brothers, C.B. Rakestraw and Woodrow Rakestraw, both of Leaksville, N.C.; five sisters, Mrs. Luther Carter and Mrs. H.L. Laws of Leaksville, Mrs. Paul Landreth of Winston Salem, N.C., and Mrs. R.G. Julian, of Richmond, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of the W.J.M. Holland and Son Funeral Home by the Rev. Tucker G. Humphries, pastor of Franklin Congregational Church, assisted by the Rev. Calvin Felton, pastor of the Suffolk Baptist Church. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were J.W. Fox, A.D. Mitchell, John T. Claude, Jennings Midgett, Jack Pratt and Dr. John Julian.
