All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARTHA "FANNY" HINES GRAY ROCHELLE 1791 - 1870 Departed this life at her residence in Jerusalem, Southampton County, Va. on the 12th of March, 1870. Mrs. Martha B. Rochelle, in the 80th year of her age. She died in the bright hope of a blissful immortality; for her unselfish devotion to the happiness of others, and her [unclear] like faith in Christ, enabled her to walk [unclear] the great darkness undismayed. Dying of a ripe old age, she left no work unfinished. Feeling the [unclear] of age creep on her hold on life gradually loosened and nothing but sorrow of parting with those she loved on earth held her from the joys of heaven. Hospitable to a fault, accomplished, and reared in the school of the noble men and women of the purest and happiest days of Virginia, of full and varied [unclear], she was the delight of a large circle of war and attached friends. One by one those friends have fallen by the wayside on the journey of [unclear] life and she stood alone by the [unclear] she took her last rest. She lost a noble son and a most beautiful and accomplished daughter in her lifetime, but one son was left and her grandchildren o’ gladden he declining days, and he last look of affection on earth rested on all that was dear to her but one. James was a clerk for the Southampton County Court during the trial of Nat Turner. James died in 1835. James and Martha had a child named James Henry Rochelle who served in the Confederate Navy. They also had a daughter named Martha who married John Tyler, Jr., son of President Tyler.
