Holland & Sons Funeral Chapel, Franklin, by Dr. Ira D. Hudgins of Franklin Baptist Church and Rev. Edwin C. Thornton of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were Charles Hall, Michael Allen, William V. Johnson, Henry Brothers, Stuart Dimick, Jimmy Bellingly, Joseph Chase, Barry Roberts, William N. Hawa and William G. McCandless. Rideout, 20, a sheet finisher at Union Camp Corp., died Monday of injuries received in a six vehicle accident on Rt. 58 east of Franklin. State Trooper W.P. Twine said Rideout, driving a 1963 sports car had stopped in the west-bound land because of the six vehicle collision ahead. He got out of his car, Twine said, just as a tractor-trailer truck operated by Ralph Edward Rogers of Norfolk came up behind the sports car. The state Trooper said Rideout saw the truck approach and began to run. The driver swerved to the left to avoid hitting the car but hit Rideout and the car. State police said that a car driven east by Stanley A. Rama of Chesapeake stopped for a school bus on the foggy highway. Then, said the trooper, a truck operated by James E. Graham of Franklin stopped behind Rama’s car. A third vehicle, an eastbound tractor trailer operated by Luther D. Cyree of Estill Springs, Tenn., came up behind the other two vehicles. Cyree ran into the right rear of the truck, Twine said, pushing it crosswise over the center lane. A log truck, driven by Percy Hunter of Franklin, was stopped in the westbound lane, the trooper said, and was hit by the truck driven by Graham. Then, the trooper said, another tractor trailer driven east by Henry Benjamin Clark of Ivor approached the scene and swerved, trying to avoid Mrs. Davis’ car. He hit Mrs. Davis, who was standing by her car. Clark’s tractor trailer continued on, hitting the gas tank of the log truck. Southampton County medical examiner Dr. Winfred D. Ward said Rideout died from head injuries. He was dead on arrival at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Rideout was the husband of Mrs. Brenda Cutchin Rideout and a son of Daniel Thornton and Mrs. Veronka Allen Rideout. He was a member of Franklin Baptist Church. Besides his widow and parents, surviving are a son Paul D. Rideout; a brother, David E. Rideout; and grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude C. Rideout, all of Franklin.
