RIDLEY RETURNS FROM A CHRISTMAS BALL AND DIES. Had Eaten a Hearty Supper and Fell Asleep, Captain Barnes Passes Away - Assistant- Secretary McAdoo Dined. NORFOLK, VA., December 28.-(Special.)- Mr. N. B. Ridley, first teller of the Bank of Portsmouth, died suddenly at an early hour this morning, just after returning from the Christmas ball at Kirn Hall, where he spent the evening and enjoyed a hearty supper. Death occurred just as he fell asleep, and nothing unusual was noticed by his wife except his hard breathing. He was about forty-eight years of age, and leaves a wife and four children. Deceased was a native of Southampton county, and came to Portsmouth about twenty years ago. He was a member of the City Council and belonged to Trinity Protestant Episcopal church and several benevolent organizations. A CAROLINIAN GONE. About midnight last night Captain George H. Barnes [sic*] died at his rooms at the Atlantic Hotel, after a long illness, in the 54th year of his age. Deceased was a native of Murfreesboro, N. C., [sic*] and started in the cotton business here just after the war, making a fortune. During the war he served as captain in the Confederate army. He was described as follows: age 49, 5'7½" (Eng.), medium forehead, hazel eyes, regular nose, mouth- mustache, round chin, light hair, fair complexion, oval face.
