RIDLEY Suffolk, Jan. 6. - Nathaniel Thomas Ridley, 81, one of the foremost citizens of Southampton County and this section of the State, Confederate veteran and large planter, died yesterday at his home, "Bloomfield." Mr. Ridley was the son of Col. Thomas Ridley, of Southampton, and Mrs. Margaret Jordan Ridley, and was born at "Bonnie Doon," a famous ante-bellum plantation of that county. He is survived by a daughter, Miss Roberta Ridley, and one brother, William J. [sic; J. William] Ridley, of Courtland, and a number of relatives in the county. Funeral services will be held about 11 o'clock Wednesday morning at the home and at 2:30 burial services will be held at the old family cemetery of the Ridleys, "Rock Springs," also in Southampton. The services will be conducted by the Rev. RIDLEY Suffolk, Jan. 7. - Funeral services for Nathaniel Thomas Ridley, of Southampton County, were held today at his late home "Bloomfield," and were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Taylor, Episcopal rector of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Burial was made in the family cemetery at "Rock Spring" plantation. Active pallbearers were: H.K. Burgwyn, G.P. Burgwyn, W.H.S. Burgwyn, Lonnie Urquhart, Selden Urquhart, H. Stuart Lewis, E. Wilkins Lewis and Churchill Ridley. ****************************************************************************** DEATH OF N. T. RIDLEY Nathaniel Thomas Ridley, a well-known citizen of this county and a member of one of its most prominent old families, died at his country home, "Bloomfield," near Boykins on Monday, January 5, at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Mr. Ridley was 81 years old and was the son of the late Colonel Thomas Ridley and Mrs. Margaret Jordan Ridley, being born at "Bonnie Doon," the old Ridley plantation on the Courtland-Emporia highway near Capron. He leaves a daughter, Miss Roberta Ridley, and one brother, J. William Ridley of "Violet Hill" near Courtland, besides a wide circle of relatives throughout the county and section and many warm, personal friends. Mr. Ridley, although quiet and unassuming in manner and never seeking preferment at the hands of the public, had lived a long, honored and useful life in his county and home community. He was a farmer of large interests; had served his community as magistrate for many years and saw long service on the County Democratic Executive Committee. He served throughout the War Between the States with bravery and gallantry and was a man of sterling qualities and unquestioned integrity. Funeral services were conducted from his late home Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock by Rev. Mr. Taylor, Episcopal Rector of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and interment was made in the Ridley family burying ground on "Rock Spring" plantation near Capron at 2:30, being largely attended by friends from all sections of the county. The body bearers were: H.K. Burgwyn, G.P. Burgwyn, Senator W.H.S. Burgwyn, Lonnie Urquhart, Selden Urquhart, H. Stuart Lewis, E. Wilkins Lewis and Churchill Ridley. A VMI cadet, he participated in the Battle of New Market, and later served as a private in Co. L, 62nd GA Cav. Nat m. his first cousin Mary Thomas RIDLEY 13 Dec 1866. (Southampton Co. MB1A:155; M.Reg. p. 19 #120) Their daughter "Miss Bert" Roberta Mary RIDLEY (1872 - 1949) was the last to be buried in the "Rock Spring" cemetery. She donated her father's 1200-acre plantation "Bloomfield" to the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia. Most of the pallbearers were Nat's nephews; Henry Stuart LEWIS and Edmund Wilkins LEWIS were sons of Nat's wife's sister "Sallie" Sarah Ann (RIDLEY LONG; Mrs. Dr. Henry Wilkins) LEWIS. Most are buried in Church of the Saviour Cemetery, Jackson, Northampton Co., NC.
