He was a son of the late James Goodman and Elizabeth Bryant Railey and the widower of Clara Bradshaw Railey. A retired chief deputy sheriff for Southampton County, he was a past member of the Southampton County Board of Supervisors; a member of the Courtland Masonic Lodge No. 85 AF&AM and a member and past president of Newsoms Ruritan Club. He was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church where he served as Men's Bible Class teacher, Sunday School superintendent and chairman of the Administrative Board. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara L. Railey of Williamsburg and Dorothy R. Grizzard and her husband, Jerry, of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Craig O. Smith of Newport News, Todd B. Smith and his wife Kristen of Williamsburg, Susan G. Hiser and her husband, Brian, of Gloucester, Kim G. Jones and her husband, Lew, of Yorktown; and six great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Smith, Joshua Smith, Brett Smith, Chad Hiser, Railey Hiser and Claire Hiser. He was predeceased by a brother, John Richard Railey. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Newsoms United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Langley and the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery with Masonic rites accorded. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home, Boykins Chapel, and suggests that memorials be made to the Newsoms UMC, P.O. Box 297, Newsoms, VA 23874.
