JOEL CUTCHINS RAWLS LOCAL PHYSICIAN BURIED SUNDAY A graveside funeral service for Dr. Joel Cutchins Rawls, 85, prominent local physician was conducted Sunday afternoon in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. David L. Crook assistant pastor of Franklin Baptist Church and the Rev. Robert E. Davis of Emanuel Episcopal Church. W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home was in charge. Pallbearers were Charles Rawls, James J. Rawls, Delanie Hingerty, Bruce Johnson, Steve Boykins, Wayland Stephenson Jr., Sol W. Rawls Jr., and John Lee Johnson. Rawls died Friday in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk, following a long illness. A native of Nansemond county, he was a son of Robert and Mrs. Diana Cutchins Rawls and the husband of the late Mrs. Ella Guthrie Rawls. He attended the College of William and Mary, and Medical College of Virginia and received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1909. He first practiced medicine in Florida, then moved to Franklin where he practiced more than 50 years until his retirement. He was founder of Tidewater Beagle Club and a pioneer breeder of registered Guernsey cattle. He was a life member of Medical Society of Virginia and a charter member of Bruner Bible Class of Franklin Baptist Church. He is survived by a brother, Sol W. Rawls Sr. of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.
