He has recently sustained a severe attack of double pneumonia and although critically ill for several weeks, he had successfully weathered the crisis with wonderful vitality for a man of his advanced years, and friends were hopeful for his recovery until only a few days ago. He was a native of Nansemond County where he had spent practically all of his life, moving to Franklin several months ago to spend his declining years with his children in this town. He was one of his county’s most honorable and highly esteemed citizens, a consistent and useful member of South Quay Baptist Church for many years. As a gallant follower of the "Stars and Bars" he leaves to his children the priceless heritage of the patriot, a man whose comrades testify of him that none-showed more bravery in action or the confederacy than he throughout the entire four years of the great civil struggle from 1861 to 1865 as member of Company "I" 41st Virginia Regiment, Mahone’s brigade. He was one of the charter members of Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias, the members of that order participating in the burial services. His first wife who was Miss Diana Cutchins, a sister of Mr. C.A. Cutchins of this town, preceded him to the grave a number of years ago and was the mother of the six sons and four daughters who now survive him. He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Bettie Daughtrey, of Nansemond County, six sons, Dr. J.C. Rawls, Sol. W. Rawls, and R.P. Rawls of Franklin, John A. Rawls and C. Randolph Rawls of the South Quay community and J.T. Rawls of Dunnellon, Florida; four daughter, Mrs. J. Paul Jones, Misses Christine and Mabel Rawls of Franklin and Mrs. J.R.L. Johnson of East Radford, Va., three brothers, R.E. Rawls of Franklin, B.B. Rawls of Clearwater, Florida, and D.P. Rawls of Portsmouth: three sisters, Mrs. Allen Daughtrey and Mrs. Josie Brooks of Franklin and Mrs. B.F. Bell of Petersburg. He also leaves in this section a wide circle of relatives and numerous friends who admired him for sterling qualities of Christian citizenship. The funeral services were conducted from his late residence yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by Rev. M.A. MacLean of the Franklin Baptist Church, assisted by Dr. C.H. Rowland of the Christian church and Dr. J.L. Lawless, and interment followed in Poplar Spring Cemetery where a large company of friends had gathered to pay their last tribute to his memory.
