All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ DEATH OF URIAH RAWLS Uriah Rawls, well-known and highly-esteemed Franklin citizen, died Sunday night at his home in South Street after an illness of several months. Mr. Rawls, who was 72 years of age, was born in Isle of Wight County, the son of the late Elisha and Mrs. Mary Cobb Rawls, and had spent the greater part of his life in Franklin, marrying Miss Nannie Elizabeth Cotton of this community December 10, 1890 [sic; 1891]. Mr. Rawls was one of the town's best citizens, energetic, industrious and honorable. He was a man of an unusually keen mind and was four square in all of his relations with his fellowmen. For nearly 20 years he was general superintendent of the Camp Manufacturing Co., being engaged in the lumber business himself for the last 32 years. He was an active and useful member of the Franklin Baptist Church and of the Bruner Bible Class of its Sunday school. He is survived by his wife and nine children; Spurgeon Rawls of Port Arthur, Texas, Dr. E. Cotton Rawls of Stamford, Conn., and Uriah Rawls, Jr., of this town; by six daughters, Mrs. J.B. Barnes and Miss Kate Rawls of Franklin, Mrs. Leslie E. Bush of Richmond, Mrs. Chaffe A. Scarborough of Miami, Fla., Mrs. J. Winston Camp of Ivor and Mrs. W.T. LaNeave of Manteo, N.C. Mrs. D.C. Cotton of this town, a niece of Mrs. Rawls, was also reared as a daughter in the Rawls home. He leaves one brother, John T. Rawls of Capron, a sister, Mrs. J.T. Lowe of Hopewell, and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the home Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock by his Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by the Rev. Dr. I.W. Johnson of Suffolk. Burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, active pallbearers being: Dr. R.L. Raiford, L.B. Holland, J.L. Rountree, Roger I. Beale, G.E. Pillow, Joe Johnson, C.F. Whitfield and John E. Beale. A number of friends of the family served as honorary bearers.
