Rainey, 45, Of Carrsville Died September 1st William Dallas Rainey, 45, of Carrsville, died September 1st at 11:10 A.M. at the home of a niece, Mrs. Ferguson of 103 Oregon Ave., Portsmouth, after a long illness [sic*]. He was a patient at the Grandy Sanitarium, Norfolk, for many months. He was the son of John Thomas and Ella Taylor Rainey, of Isle of Wight County, and the husband of Mrs. Jimmie Powell Rainey of Carrsville. He was a member of Suffolk Christian Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by seven sons, William D., Jr., Edward, John, James, Thornton, Charles and Robert, all of Carrsville; one daughter, Mary Ella Rainey of Carrsville; a brother, Rufus Rainey of Dillwyn; a half- brother, Linwood Baughm of Weldon, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Rivers of Reedsville, N.C.; Mrs. Mary Barnett of Richmond, and Mrs. Mattie Dundalow of Magnolia. His widow (1902 - 1972) is buried in Hillsboro Memorial Cemetery, Brandon, Hillsborough Co., FL. ****************************************************************************** He appears in the 1930 Census as a prisoner in the Nansemond Co. jail. "Suffolk (VA) News-Herald," Vol. 6, No. 302, Fri., Feb. 15, 1929, p. 8 GATESVILLE Willie Rainey, white, and Sylvester Jackson, colored, were arrested at the filling station known as the Roelack Babley place, and owned by Gatesville Oil Co., J.W. Brown, manager, Saturday, February 9. Rainey was arrested at the request of the Suffolk authorities, for the theft of $50 in cash and a watch valued at $40 off of the person of two residents of Suffolk. He was brought to Gatesville and the Suffolk authorities were here very soon after receiving the message that he had been taken. The Negro, Jackson, was arrested for driving a car under the influence of whiskey, and given a hearing, placed under bond for his appearance in next term of Superior Court, and in default of same is in jail. Butler was arraigned on a charge of improper parking. This case was dismissed. Bessie Gwaltney, colored, was fined $5 and costs on a charge of being drunk. John Winstead, colored, was fined $5 and costs on a charge of disorderly conduct. Will Rainey was arraigned on a charge passing worthless checks. He was released on the payment of court costs and also paying the checks. "Suffolk (VA) News-Herald, Vol. 7, No. 267, Mon., Jan. 13, 1930, p. 8 BUSY SESSIONS CIRCUIT COURT Grand Jury Returns Batch of Indictments and There Are a Number of Convictions on Opening Day of January Term The grand jury of the Nansemond county circuit court at the first session of the January term found the following true bills and the following penalties were imposed at the convening this morning: Fred Jackson, prohibition, six months and $10 fine; Mathew Bowsey, housebreaking, two years; James Walton, prohibition, six months, $10 fine; John Gary, prohibition, 6 months, $10 fine; Robert Wyatt, prohibition, 12 months, $25 fine; Richard Johnson, prohibition, nine months, $25 fine. The grand jury also found the following true bills: Willie Rainey, impersonating an officer; Henry E. Brinkley, rape; Charlie Barber, felonious shooting; Earl Munds, prohibition. [...] "Suffolk (VA) News-Herald," Vol. 8, No. 10, Wed., Apr. 2, 1930, p. 3 Is Held On Charge Of Impersonating Officer Will Rainey, alias "Wild Bill" Rainey, is in Nansemond county jail today awaiting trial on a charge of falsely representing an officer and extorting money and property from Malachi Lawrence. It is said that Wild Bill told officers last night that he would not be in jail this morning, (whatever that meant) he was in jail this morning. It is said that on one occasion Wild Bill held up several Negroes and upon finding that not one in the crowd had any money he took them in a store and bought a round of drinks and assured them that he was perfectly peacable and did not intend to hurt them.
