LUCY JANE RAWLS SAVAGE

   Mrs. S.B. Savage died at her home in South High Street early Sunday 
morning, February 26.  Mrs. Savage was in her 53rd* year and had been ill 
since last August.  She was before her marriage Miss Lucy Jane Rawls, daughter 
of the late William and Mrs. Martha J. Rawls of this town, and was born at the 
same homestead where she had spent her life, her parents being among the 
original settlers in Franklin.  In July 1907, she married S.B. Savage, who 
survives her together with three children: Miss Martha Savage of the College 
of William and Mary, S.B. Savage Jr., and Mary Elizabeth Savage.  She is also 
survived by two sisters, Mrs. E.A. Dillon of Franklin and Mrs. M.R. Thigpen of 
Suffolk and one brothers, Willie Rawls of this town.

   Mrs. Savage was a woman of many fine qualities, a consistent Christian, a 
devoted wife and mother and a good neighbor.  She was retiring in manner but 
those who knew her and had visited in the home esteemed her highly for her 
gracious traits and her unselfish service to her family.  It is interesting to 
say of her that she was the last surviving member of Old South Quay Primitive 
Baptist Church, and that for many years following the abandoning of the old 
church building, occasional services were held in the home of her mother, Mrs. 
Rawls, by Elder Sylvester Hassell of Williamston, N.C., a prominent minister 
of that faith, who has recently been given an honorary degree by the 
University of North Carolina, and who, although now in his 86th year, came to 
Franklin to officiate at the funeral of Mrs. Savage.

    Services were conducted from her late home Monday afternoon at 3:30 
o’clock by Dr. Hassell in the presence of a large number of friends. Mrs. J.S. 
Morgan of Suffolk sang "Abide with Me" and Mrs. Morgan, Misses Fanny and 
Lessie Webb and J. Edgar Weede sang "Jesus, Lover of My Soul."  Interment was 
made in the family burial plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery where the same 
quartette sang "Nearer My God of Thee."  The body bearers were: Uriah Rawls, 
J.L. Rountree, J.R. Lankford, E.G. Evans, Captain W.R. Hayes, A.A. Cutchin, 
M.G. McClenny and Joe Johnson.  The honorary pallbearers were: Dr. R.H. Cobb, 
M.H. Moore, Geo. H. Parker, Joe Bynum Gay, H.W. Lloyd, John Beaton, Wayland 
Jones, P.E. Vaughan, J.A. Pretlow, W.T. Pace, T.A. Vaughan and G.G. Coulbourne 
of Suffolk.  The Senior Class of the Franklin High School, of which S.B. 
Savage, Jr., is a member, attended the funeral in a body.
