Speight died at her home in Courtland, Thursday morning, May 24, at 6 o'clock, in the 81st year of her age. Mrs. Speight was a loyal and consistent member of the Courtland Baptist Church and number many friends in the town and community. Funeral services and burial will take place Friday at 1 o'clock at the old Edwards burial ground on the Franklin-Courtland road. Services conducted by her pastor, the Rev. R.E. Burke. Pallbearers are E.F. Drake, L.W. Vaughan, Tyler Edwards, G.C. Kirkland, B.L. Edwards and R.L. Young. Mrs. Speight is survived by her husband, one sister, Mrs. W.G. Edwards, of Suffolk, two nieces, Mrs. Z.V. Cross, of Whaleyville, Miss Sallie Lou Edwards, of Suffolk, four nephews, Joe, W.E., R.G., and H.C. Edwards, all of Courtland. She & her nephew Joseph Henry EDWARDS have been added to an EDWARDS family cemetery on Unity Rd., where her brother-in-law William G. EDWARDS is listed; all the graves there are unmarked. William G. is presumably listed there because it is his brother's cemetery. Mary & James m. 3 May 1882 at her father's residence. Their parents are reversed in the m.recs. (Southampton Co. M.Reg. {BVS copy} p. 348 #71; MB4:488) Her nephew Joseph appeared in the 1920 Census with her sisters Priscilla EDWARDS & Margaret Ellen (EDWARDS; wid/o John H.)
