But a few minutes halt around a comfortable fire the sad news reached me of the death of three little children of James E. Spain, a worthy member of the Masonic Lodge. What a bereavement has fallen upon our brother and his wife. Life’s ebbing tide bid their children to that undiscovered country as follows: Jas. K. Spain, born Oct. 26, 1881, died Jan. 15, 1889, Carrie Lily Spain, born Sept. 18, 1883, died Jan. 24, 1889, William Penrose Spain, born Jan. 8, 1886, died Jan. 26, 1889 - all of diphtheria. The three fresh little mounds now lie in the village cemetery. Their little spirits have been waited to a heavenly home. Father and mother, you will miss your little ones but remember God is always too wise to err. Bow with due reverence to your sad affliction. May angels of comfort encamp around you falls from the pen of the writer. May your little babe (the only one left) be spared and in after years bring him up on the nurturing admonition of the Lord. James Kenneth SPAIN, 26 Oct 1881 - 15 Jan 1889; Carrie Lily SPAIN, 18 Sep 1883 - 24 Jan 1889; William Penrose SPAIN, 8 Jan 1886 - 26 Jan 1889; children of Mr. & Mrs. James E. SPAIN, of Joynersville, listed in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms*, "The Tidewater News" (Franklin, VA), 'Joynersville Dots,' Jan. 1888 *Their parents are buried there. Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS}, Cemetery Project, Hollywood list (N-60 & -61): http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/cemeteries/hollywd.txt We previously described them as interred on the old Russell FERGUSON farm. The source of that is not known, and it does not agree with "the village cemetery.
