Spain, Sr., 75, died Saturday night, January 14, at his home in Drewryville. He was the husband of Mrs. Viola Edwards Spain and the son of the late Charles Emmett and Mrs. Rebecca Hill Spain. He was a retired section foreman with the Seaboard Airline Railroad, having retired ten years ago after 44 years of service. He was also a member of the Courtland Lodge, A.F. and A.M. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six sons, Robert Wilson Spain and Wallace Edward Spain, both of Norfolk, William J. Spain, Jr., of Suffolk, Jack Langford Spain of Christiansburg, Charles Emmett Spain, United States Air Force, Warner Robins, Ga., and George Tillman Spain of Drewryville; four daughters, Mrs. N.W. Owen, Mrs. J.L. Covington, and Mrs. Ray Jones, all of Portsmouth and Mrs. R.E. Moore of Ozark, Ala.; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Simmons of Courtland and Mrs. Lena Spain of Homeville; one brother, C.F. Spain of Homeville; 15 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Drewryville Cemetery with Rev. William Stennett, pastor of Thomas Memorial Baptist Church, and Rev. D.F. Willis, pastor of Drewryville Methodist Church, officiating. Active pallbearers were John T. Claud, Bob Claud, Alton Grizzard, Thornton Thomas, Owen Johnson and Bill Leigh.
