Sykes, widow of the late Joseph L. Sykes of Boykins, died at her home in Boykins Monday, September 30, in her 54th year. She was the daughter of the late John Calvin Sykes and Mrs. Adna Sykes of Wake County, N.C., and a niece of the late Dr. J.H. M. Sykes of this county, a member of an old and well-known Southampton family. He husband died in 1925 and she is survived by five children: Mrs. P.T. Person of Boykins, Mrs. George C. Brooks of Norfolk, Miss Inez Sykes, Joe Lewis and David Sykes of Boykins; by two grandchildren, Patricia Person of Boykins and Congdon Brooks of Norfolk, besides a large family connection and many friends. Mrs. Sykes was an active communicant of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Boykins, where she had long served as organist; was a member of the Epworth Bible Class, the W.C.T.U., and of the Boykins Garden Club; esteemed and loved as an exemplary Christian character, and a woman of many fine traits of mind. Funeral services were held from St. Thomas’ Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, the rites being read by a former Rector, Rev. J. Sutherland-Watt of St. Peter’s Church, Norfolk, assisted by Rev. J.L. Kibler and Rev. Frank B. Handley of Boykins. Burial was made in Beechwood Cemetery, the active pallbearers being: C.T. Beaton, Jno. R. Person, W.R. Emmons, R.W. Simmons, B.F. Britt, W.W. White, Jr., W. Hugh Powell and Ed. Barclay. [Inez Williams (SYKES; Mrs. Joseph L.)
