Holland & Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. W.O. Hudson, the Rev. Harry Bunch and the Rev. Daniel Ivey. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Sykes, L.F. Draper Jr., Donald Porter, James Lawrence, W. Tall Jones, Alden Gee, John Abbitt and Richard Lawrence. Sykes, 85, died Sunday at 2:25 a.m. in Louise Obici Hospital, Suffolk. He was a lifelong resident of Southampton County. He was a retired messenger for Railway Express Co. He was a son of Dr. Joseph Henry Merrell and Mrs. Laura Summerell Sykes and the husband of the late Mrs. Josephine Lawrence Sykes. He was a member of Boykins United Methodist Church. Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Eloise S. Brooks of Virginia Beach and Mrs. Inez S. Lassiter of Boykins; and two nephews, John David Sykes of Boykins and Joseph L. Sykes Jr. of Newsoms.
