The boy was accompanied by his five-year old sister Annie, who ventured too near the blaze, and her clothing was ignited. The efforts of the children to extinguish the flames were futile, and the little girl received injuries which terminated in her death after eight hours of torture. Annie SCOTT, daughter of James Tarlton & Caroline (BRYANT) SCOTT, of Southampton Co., fatally buried, ca. Apr 1896, age 5, "The Norfolk Virginian," Vol. 51, No. 116, Apr. 4, 1896, p. 6, col. 1-2 Her parents m. 7 Jan 1884, at Bowers. (So.Co. MB7:235) The family appeared in the 1900 Census in Jerusalem Dist., So.Co. Caroline had 6 of 9 children surviving; Arthur was then 13. The family appeared in the 1910 Census in Jerusalem Dist., So.Co. Caroline, widowed, had 7 of 11 children surviving. Her mother is buried unmarked in Black Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
