SCOTT OF WEDNESDAY Butler Scott, well-known Franklin citizen and rural mail carrier here for more than 27 years, died quite suddenly at his home in Clay Street Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Scott had been complaining for several days of pains in the region of his heart, and after serving his route Wednesday as usual had gone in the afternoon to the investigation being held at Howell’s Corner in connection with the recent attack by a gang of Negroes on J.J. Howell there. Returning to Franklin he had been in his home only a few moments when he collapsed as Mrs. Scott was preparing something for indigestion from which he said he was suffering. Dr. R.L. Raiford who was called immediately found Mr. Scott dead and pronounced it angina. Rufus Butler Scott was born in the Franklin community 58 years ago, the son of the late Woodson Scott and Mrs. Sarah Councill Scott. He was the first rural carrier to be appointed here in 1906, and second rural carrier in this county, serving continuously on Franklin Route One since that time. He maintained an active interest in county district and State organizations of rural carriers, always attending their annual sessions. For several years he had been President of the Rural Letter Carriers Association of Southampton County, and last year was elected President of the same organization for Tidewater Virginia. He was faithful to the essential relations of life and a man who numbered many friends, being a special favorite among all the children of the town and along his route. In March, 1898, he married Miss Mary Maddox of Greenville, S.C., who died in 1916, Mrs. Wesley Beale of this town and Councill Scott of Durham, N.C., being the children of this union. In October, 1918, he married Miss Montie Maddox of Greenville, S.C., a sister of his first wife. Besides Mrs. Scott who survives him with their daughter, Elizabeth, he leaves three brothers, Geo. W. Scott of Charlotte, N.C., Robert L. and J. Hersey Scott of Franklin, and three sisters, Mrs. C.H. Hayes and Miss Eva Scott of Franklin and Mrs. J.P. Bradshaw of Sedley. Funeral services will be conducted from the home in Clay Street this (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Baptist Church, and interment will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Henry Duck, C.J. Cutchins, W.H. Lankford, Harry Steinhardt, J.D. Fowler, Exum N. White, Amos P. Pope of Drewryville and Paul Scarborough.
