Stanley Harrell Scott, 27, of Franklin, was killed instantly last Sunday night when his car was in collision with a truck on Route 58 about a mile east of Suffolk. The accident took place at around 8:30, as Scott was returning to Franklin. A truck reported to have been driven by L.C. Douglas of Portsmouth and said to be the property of George Rheaman & Company, Inc., of Portsmouth, was the other vehicle involved. The truck was headed towards Portsmouth. The accident was investigated by State Trooper R.W. Smith, who booked Douglas on a manslaughter charge and released him on bond. Scott was the fifth Franklin person to die on the same highway, and within a few miles of the same spot, within a period of eight days. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Beaton, their daughter, Jacqueline, and Mrs. Beaton’s sister-in-law, Mrs. Thomas W. Dunlow, were killed on Saturday night, February 21, in an auto-truck collision near Magnolia on Route 58. Scott is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Scott of the Franklin community; two brothers, Herman and Emmett Scott of Franklin; two sisters, Mrs. Asa Joyner of the community and Mrs. D.N. Clark of Fayetteville, N.C., and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted from the residence of his parents on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock by the Rev. R.E. Brittle of Suffolk, and Dr. Elwood W. Jones of Franklin. A quartet consisting of Dr. Darden W. Jones, Robert A. Vaughan, Mrs. T. Hayes Holland and Mrs. Hudson Conwell sang "Sometime We’ll Understand" and " Abide with Me." There were many beautiful floral tributes. Burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery with the following pallbearers: Howard Turner, D.D. McConnell, Hudson Powell, Bernard Blythe, Elmo Blythe, Edward Daughtrey, W.H. Scott and V.R. Scott.
