Stephenson, 54, died Monday in his home after a heart attack. A native of Smithfield, N.C., he was a son of Mrs. Kitty Johnson Stephenson and the late Israel O. Stephenson. He was the husband of Mrs. Maxine Stephenson of Branchville. He was a member of Branchville Baptist Church. A World War II veteran, he was a retired Navy chief commissary steward. Surviving, besides his widow, are five daughters, Mrs. Harvey P. Byrd of Aulander, N.C., Mrs. Gary P. Baker, and Miss Kitty Stephenson of Washington, and Nancy and Donna Stephenson of Branchville; a son, Jennings Stephenson of Branchville; four brothers, Wade Stephenson and Jimmy Stephenson of Smithfield, N.C., Horace Stephenson of Virginia Beach and Carl Stephenson of Jacksonville, N.C.; four sisters, Mrs. Ray Cobb, Mrs. S.D. Allen, and Mrs. Woodrow Little of Smithfield and Mrs. Denzel Adams of Chesapeake; and five grandchildren. A funeral service was held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Branchville Baptist Church by the Rev. Russell Wimmer. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. Pallbearers were Linton Grizzard, Clay Beasley, T.Q. Bolton, Lewis Jordan, Elton Casper, Newman Milteer, T.C. Bunn, Jr. and C.D. Cobb.
