Stephens, 82, a lifelong resident of Boykins, died in Obici Hospital, Suffolk, at 4:55 o’clock Sunday morning, October 6, after a long illness. He was the widower of Mrs. Nonie L. Stephens and son of B.L. and Mrs. Lurainey Cox Stephens. A retired rural mail carrier, he was a member and deacon of Boykins Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, B. Franklin Stephens of Portsmouth; four daughters, Mrs. W.W. Barlow and Mrs. C.H. Holland, both of Suffolk, and Mrs. H. L. Boone and Mrs. J.O. Harrison, both of Norfolk,; one sister, Mrs. Mollie S. Lester of Portsmouth; one brother, Enoch Stephens, also of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services for Mr. Stephens were conducted at the Boykins Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by the pastor, Rev. Ben B. Ussery, and a former pastor, Rev. Frank B. Handley of Crewe. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery. The pallbearers were J.C. Blowe, J.M. Britt, Reuben S. Bryant, H.O. Carlton, Lewis Knight, Roy Lassiter, H.F. McCoy, and Hugh Powell, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of the Baptist Church and friends of the family.
