Hugh Stephenson, of Zuni, Va, Feburary 15, 1883; joined Tucker's Swamp Baptist church by letter August 10, 1887. Being possessed with much zeal and enthusiasm, she at once became a Dorcas in the church. All of the members looked upon her as a leader, especially the Ladies' Aid Society. All of the improvements to the church, after she became a member where by and through her instrumentality, and stand as a monument to her memory. Her modesty prevented her from filling some positions which she was suited. She attended nearly all of the Sunday services in her church and was a great help to her pastor. In the Sunday-school she taught a class of boys, all of whom loved her. She was a great sufferer for more than two years, her disease baffling the best physicians. During her last illness, for more than six weeks, all that could be done by experienced doctors, trained nurse, loving hearts and willing hands was freely bestowed, but all in vain. On May 30, 1900, about noon, she said to her nurse, "It seems so hard to have to climb the golden stairs alone," and at 6 o'clock PM on the same day her spirit took its flight to the God who gave it. On Friday, June 1, a large concourse of friends met at Tucker's Swamp church to listen to a sermon preached by her pastor, Rev. J.F. Deans, DD, from the text, "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright; for the end of that man is peace," after which all that was mortal of Jerusha Ann Stephenson was laid to rest in the church yard by the side of her three little children who had gone before, to await the resurrection morn. Her popularity in Zuni was shown by business being almost suspended in honor of her memory. She leaves to mourn their loss a fond and loving husband and a dutiful and affectionate son, to who she had be a Lydia, seeing them brought to the Saviour by her lovely example; also, two sisters, one brother, and a host of loving and sorrowing friends.
