STEPHENSON - CSA With his faculties unimpaired and perceptions keen Capt. William H. Stephenson at his home near Berlin yielded to the infirmities of four score years and then fell asleep on August 17, 1921. His going was like one who wraps the draperies of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams. He was born near Unity on September 11, 1831, and was buried at his birthplace, Rev. J.W. Reams, his pastor, conducting the funeral service. He had been an outstanding figure in Southampton County and its affairs for a half century. He was a brave Confederate soldier and fought from the beginning of the struggle between the States to the end at Appomattox. He was a veritable pillar of Millfield Baptist Church and deeply interested in all of its activities and in those of the denomination. Guarded but sincere of speech, he treasured his friendships above riches. While he never cared for public office, his loyalty to the Democratic party was second only to his religion. From a large family of brothers and sisters there survives him only one, Miss Emily W. Stephenson, who resided with him for many years, and to whom the hearts of the county go out in deep sympathy.
