Stakes, a former resident of Southampton County, died at his home in Isle of Wight County Thursday, July 27, aged 72, after a lingering illness. He had been for 40 years an esteemed and faithful employee of the Camp Manufacturing Company of Franklin, and was a consistent member of the Franklin Baptist Church. Mr. Stakes is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Murden Stakes; three daughters, Mrs. M.E. Gray of Norfolk, Mrs. J.C. Presson and Mrs. R.L. Gray of Franklin; a brother, John Edgar Stakes of London Bridge; a sister, Mrs. Diana McClinton of Norfolk. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at residence, conducted by the Rev. Gordon Price of Courtland. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland. Active pallbearers were Clyde and Murden Gray, Waverly, Will, Vernon and Lee Presson, R.H. Price and G.C.
