STEINHARDT PROMINENT MERCHANT AND CITIZEN DIES HERE George H. Steinhardt, one of Franklin’s best-known citizens, died at his home here May 3, after an illness of only four days. Mr. Steinhardt was born April 25, 1865, at Lutzelwig, in the grand duchy of Hesse, Germany, and came to America when 18 years of age to the South Quay community, Nansemond County, where he lived for several years before moving to Franklin. He was associated here for some years with L.R. Jones in the People’s Shoe and Clothing Company, and in October, 1904, organized the firm of G.H. Steinhardt and Company with his nephew Harry Steinhardt, which has become one of our town’s largest business enterprises. For a number of years Mr. Steinhardt was a director of the Merchants and Farmers Bank and was elected vice president of that institution a few months ago. Mr. Steinhardt’s life in Franklin had been characterized by energy, thrift and exemplary conduct always. Overcoming the handicap of coming to a new county and learning another than his mother tongue, he had amassed a considerable estate; won the friendship and esteem of the entire town and community; served his town and its institutions ably and well in whatever capacity he was called, and leaves behind him an honorable name and a record of useful Christian citizenship. For many years a faithful member of the Franklin Baptist Church, he had been treasurer of the Sunday school for some time and was always interested in the cause of his church and its various organizations. He is survived by his widow who was before her marriage Miss Susie Johnson of Nansemond County; one son, G. Carl Steinhardt; a brother, Conrad and a sister Catherine Steinhardt, both of Germany; two nephews, Harry Steinhardt of this town and Alex Steinhardt of Holland; two nieces, Mrs. Robert Daughtrey of Holland and Mrs. Harvey Griffin of Capron, and a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held from the home in Second Avenue Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock, conducted by his Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. W.B. Denson of Beaver Dam and Rev. R.P. Welch of Black Creek. An unusually large assemblage of friends had gathered there, and interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
