His death, after several months of ill health, occurred in Raiford Memorial Hospital at 9:15 o’clock. The career of Harry Steinhardt, who was one of Franklin’s oldest and most successful merchants, may be regarded as typical of the thousands of Europeans who left their homes in the Old World in order to find greater security and freedom in the New and who helped make America great. Mr. Steinhardt was born in Lutzelwig, Germany, on October 28, 1877, the son of Ludwig and Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Steinhardt. He came to this country in 1891, when he was in his 14th year, to make his home with an uncle, Henry Steinhardt, a farmer residing in Nansemond County. After two years he moved to Suffolk, where he attended school and worked after school hours and on Saturdays. In 1903 he entered the employ of the E.L. Folk Hardware Company, a Suffolk firm, having charge of the china and glassware department. The following year he came to Franklin to enter the hardware business established by another uncle, the late George H. Steinhardt. In 1947 he became sole owner of the business known as G.H. Steinhardt & Company. In April 25, 1906, he married Miss Florence Parr of Suffolk, who died in March 1947. The deceased was a member of High Street Methodist Church, on the official board of which he served for many years. His service included a term as lay leader of his church. He took a special interest in the R.M. Chandler Bible Class, of which he had been a member since its founding. Mr. Steinhardt also shared in the civic and fraternal affairs of the community. As a long-time member of the Franklin Rotary Club he was seldom absent from a meeting, and never without good cause. He belonged to both the Masonic and Pythian orders. In the later he had won the coveted insigne indicating 50 years of membership. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth S. Widmer of Lewiston, N.C., and Mrs. Mildred S. Jones and Mrs. Florence S. Purnell of Franklin; and a sister Mrs. Martha Zinn of Homberg, Germany. Services for Mr. Steinhardt were held in High Street Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the presence of a large concourse of friends, with the pastor, Rev. James W. Turner, and Rev. J.S. Maxey officiating. Interment in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery was with Masonic rites. Pallbearers were Hobart Steele of Burlington, N.C. and Philip Frankford, Emmett W. Holt, Herbert M. Lewis, William H. Ludt, Ferrell F. Powell, Hubert S. Rawlings and Willie M. Weede.
