BEAMAN STORY A funeral service for Dr. Beaman Story, 75, of Franklin was held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Emmanuel Episcopal Church by the Rev. Ben R. Duffy, rector. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were C.A. Cutchin III, S.W. Rawls Jr., John M. Camp Jr., A. Gibson Howell, John Bynum Gay III and W.F. Hart Jr. Dr. Story was a native of Franklin. He practiced dentistry here for 47 years, from 1919 until his retirement in January 1966. He was at one time a partner with his nephew, the late Dr. William E. Snipes Jr. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, 1912-14, and was a 1917 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia with the degree of D.D.S. Dental Surgery. He was a member of the Southside Dental Society of Virginia, the Virginia State Dental Association and the American Dental Association. In 1964 he was presented life memberships in both the Virginia and the American Associations. His pre-college education was at the Euphradian Institute in Franklin and at Franklin High School. Dr. Story was the son of the late James Marion Story and Pattie Beaman Story. He was married in 1922 to Mary Moore Pierce, of Lancaster County, Va., who survives at the home in Franklin. He volunteered for service in the first World War. He was a captain in the Medical Corps of the American Expeditionary Force in France, and served with the famous Fourth and Fifth Marine Brigades in the Second Marine Division. He was with that Division in its combat campaigns and in the march to Coblenz for the occupation of Germany after the Armistice. He is believed to have been the third man from Southampton County to arrive overseas in World War I. He returned home early enough to march in the front rank of officers who led Franklin’s Homecoming Parade on June 25, 1919. He was a charter member of Southampton Post 73 of the American Legion, formed in 1919, and was commander of the post in 1923. Dr. Story was prominent in varied civic services. He was president of the Franklin Rotary Club in 1939-40, and it was under his guidance in that office that the Community Fund of Franklin was organized. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 51 in Franklin. He was active in Boy Scout work for many years, and in 1929 became scoutmaster of the first Boy Scout Troop in Franklin. More than a hundred men are now living who were at one time or another in that troop, and by them and other friends an office and staff building was donated in Dr. Story’s honor to Camp Siouan, the Boy Scout Camp of the Old Dominion Area Council on Lake Gaston near Lawrenceville. The building is named for him and in 1969 was dedicated to him in a ceremony at the camp which he was unable to attend, but of which he was fully aware. He was a leader in the Old Dominion Council, was formerly president of it, and in 1941 was given scouting’s top award, the coveted Silver Beaver, in recognition of his outstanding services. He was a member and past vestryman of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Franklin and was at one time senior warden of that vestry. He was a member of Cypress Cove Country Club, Franklin, and the Commonwealth Club in Richmond. Surviving besides his wife are three nephews, Elliott L. Story, Jr. of Mesa, Arizona, Walter F. Story Jr. of Suffolk and Beaman Anthony Cobb of Franklin; two nieces, Mrs. David H. Bell of Capron and Mrs. David B. Owens Jr. of Norfolk. ****************************************************************************** Pallbearers at the funeral service for Dr. Beaman Story held last Wednesday were S.W.
