Story Found Dead W.J. Story of Courtland, prominent Southampton County citizen, was found dead on his farm Thursday afternoon by an employee of Virginia Electric and Power Company. No details were available although The Tidewater News held the press for more than half an hour to secure verification and details. ****************************************************************************** Former Courtland Postmaster Dies of Heart Attack Southampton County suffered a grievous loss on Thursday afternoon, July 30, in the death of William Joseph Story, 81, of Courtland. Mr. Story, who earlier in the day appeared in his usual health, died of a heart attack while visiting one of his farms near Courtland. He was last seen alive in Courtland at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning by L.A. "Dick" Clements, when he stopped for gas at Mr. Clements' Esso service station. His body was found about 2 p.m. by Norman Bradshaw and J.T. Davidson, employees of the Virginia Electric & Power Company, who were checking a power line running near the farmhouse. The remains were viewed by Dr. T.A. Morgan, county coroner. The deceased was a member of the Courtland Baptist Church. For 15 years he served as the Courtland postmaster, retiring a few years ago. At one time he represented Southampton County in the House of Delegates. Mr. Story was the son of the late Edwin R. and Mrs. Mary Williams Story of the county, and husband of Mrs. Louise Rudasill Story, who survives him. Other survivors are two daughters, Miss Louise Story of Athens, Ga., and Mrs. J.E. Westlake of Saunderstown, R.I.; five sons, Henry Grady Story, Prentice Story and Robert Luther Story, all of Courtland, Lt. Comdr. Hatcher B. Story, USN, and William J. Story, Jr., Superintendent of Schools for South Norfolk; four grandchildren; and one brother, Edwin Story of Ashland, Ky. Funeral services for Mr. Story were conducted at 11 o'clock Saturday morning in the Courtland Baptist Church by the pastor, Rev. L.M. Kanipe, assisted by Rev. Joseph R. Johnson of Lynchburg, a former pastor, and Rev. Otis L. Gilliam, pastor of the Courtland Methodist Church. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. The pallbearers were C.C. Baker, Roscoe G. Edwards, Jr., W.B. Ellis, Lineberry Grissom, Ulysses Kitchen, G.W. Nichols, Edwin Priggen and Junius W. Pulley. William Joseph STORY (Sr.), retired Courtland postmaster, former Southampton Co.
