All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ BETTIE MAE AVENT STARKE Mrs. Bettie Mae Starke, 58, a well-known resident of Capron, died at the home near Boykins of her son, Robert E. Starke, on Monday morning, May 22, after a brief illness. She was the widow of Joseph T. Starke and the daughter of the late James W. and Rosa Wade Avent of Southampton County. She was a member of the Capron Baptist Church. Surviving* her are six sons, Clyde R. Starke of Jarratt, Stewart* M. Starke of Capron, Joseph T. Starke of Sedley, Randolph Starke of Woodbridge; a sister, Mrs. T.H. Wooten of Richmond; a brother, DeWitt Avent of Richmond; and several nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held from the Capron Baptist Church on Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock, her pastor, Rev. H.B. Jennings, officiating, assisted by Rev. R.H. Marks and Rev. L.O. Wright. Burial was in the Capron Cemetery, active pallbearers being Hugh Grizzard, James Avent, Ashley Pope, Dr. J.J. Grizzard, Paul Kirkland, Ira Barham, Howard Spain and Slade West. Starke, Bobby [Robert Everette] Starke and Bill Starke - that makes 7 sons. (bs) "Stewart" should be spelled Stuart. Only six sons {no Bill} appear in the 1930 Census - Henry Dist. (#2), Sussex Co., sheet 12B. Her son Robert Everette STARKE is buried in Waverly Cemetery. Joseph Thomas STARKE, son of Joseph & Sally (CHILDS) STARKE, was b. 24 Mar 1871, Greensville Co., & d. 28 May 1941, in Eastern State Hospital, Williamsburg, where he had been a patient since 16 Aug 1932. His Death Certificate, #12882, gives his wife as "Bettie Flowers." Notwithstanding, "Betty" appears as widowed in the 1940 Census - Littleton, Newville Dist. (#92-4), Sussex Co., sheet 9A - son Clyde on same p.
