SNIPES, PROMINENT FRANKLIN CITIZEN, IS CLAIMED BY DEATH Dr. W.E. Snipes, prominent citizen and successful professional man of our town, died suddenly at his home in South High Street Sunday morning. Apparently in the best of health, Dr. Snipes had a heart attack Sunday morning at 8:30 o’clock when Dr. R.L. Raiford and Dr. R.H. Cobb were called in. He seemed to be much easier for an hour or so, but died at 11:30. He was 51 years of age. William Elwood Snipes was born in Hertford County, North Carolina, the son of the late E.T. Snipes and Mrs. Louise Bradshaw Snipes. Following the completion of his elementary education in his native county, he attended Massey Business College in Richmond and received his degree in dentistry from the University College of Medicine, Richmond, in 1904. Practicing his profession in North Carolina for about two years, he came to Franklin in March, 1906, where he enjoyed a large practice and was actively interested in church, civic and community affairs. He was a faithful communicant of the High Street M.E. Church, a member of its board of stewards since 1912, president of the R.M. Chandler Bible Class, and a former Superintendent of the Sunday class. He served acceptably as a member of the Town Council for ten years and was on the local school board for a short while. He was on the board of director of the Merchants and Farmer Bank for several years, a charter member of Cypress Cove Country Club and belonged to the Pythian fraternity. In his professional life he kept in close touch with the national, State and regional dental association, being a member of the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Society serving on the executive committee of that body for three years, and was Vice President of the Southside Dental Society. He was a useful Christian citizen, a man of high standing among his fellows in honor and integrity who numbered a host of friends in Franklin and throughout the county and section. Universal sorrow was expressed at the news of his sudden death, and his funeral was largely attended by friends from several counties in Virginia and North Carolina, and by leading members of the profession with which he was affiliated. On June 22, 1910, he married Miss Pattie Story, daughter of the late J.M. Story and Mrs. Pattie Beaman Story of our town who survives him with one son, William Snipes, Jr., a member of the Senior Class of the Franklin High School. He leaves four brothers, Finley Snipes of Ahoskie, N.C., Edgar Thomas Snipes of Philadelphia, Oscar and Harvey Snipes of Woodland, N.C., and one sister, Mrs. John White of Andrews, S.C. Funeral services were conducted from the residence Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by the Rev. Dr. Geo. H. Spooner of High Street M.E. Church. Mrs. H.G. Cobb, Miss Cora Vaughan, E.P. Jones and J. Edward Moyler sang "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go" and "It Is Well with My Soul," J. Edgar Weede accompanying. The body bearers were members of the board of stewards, W.T. Pace, E. Frank Story, J.R. Byrd, J.A. Jackson, J.H. Boyd, Harry Steinhardt, J. Edgar Weede, Geo. H. Parker, W.C. Watson and E.C. Smith, and Dr. R.L. Raiford and Dr. R.H. Cobb. Members of the Senior Class of the Franklin High School attended in a body and interment was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
