HODGE SMITH On the morning of July 3 Mrs. Jno. W. Smith of Branchville died at Sarah Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, where she had gone for treatment a few days prior to her sudden death. Mrs. Smith was the wife of Dr. Jno. W. Smith, a prominent physician of this town, community and county. Before her marriage to Dr. Smith her maiden name was Miss Fannie M. Hodge, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Hodge, a well-known and prominent family of Wake County, N.C. She is survived by her husband Dr. Jno. W. Smith, and two daughters, Misses Mildred and Frances Smith; two sisters, Mrs. Priscilla Mitchell of McCall, S.C. and Mrs. Herbert Jones of Wake Forest, N.C., and one brother, A.R. Hodge of Knightdale, N.C. Her married life included 32 years. She was a devoted wife and mother, absolutely untiring in the loving attentions that brightened the lives of her family and friends and filling so large a place in the hearts of her husband and daughters that they will indeed miss her. Mrs. Smith was attractive in person, a woman of refined tastes and cultured mind. She possessed a charm of manner and delightful sense of humor. These traits, together with marked efficiency, made her eminent in the social life in her town and among friends. She was a devout Christian and a loyal Baptist, having been a member of Hebron Baptist Church for several years. All through her 22 years as a resident of Branchville she was an active Christian character. Both in the Missionary and Ladies Aid societies she was a faithful and loyal worker and was the leader of these societies and of the Sunbeams. A short funeral service was conducted from her late home by Rev. R.G. Kendrick of Hertford, N.C., a close friend of the family, assisted by Rev. L.W. Kersey of Drewryville. "Abide with Me" was sung by Mrs. G.E. Tyler, Mrs. N.G. Harrell, Miss Ruth Boothe, Mrs. Leon O. Tyler, Mrs. J.W.H. Darden, Philip Ellis and W.F. Spencer. Interment was made at Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins, Rev. Mr. Kendrick conducting the services, assisted by Rev. Frank B. Handley of Boykins, Rev. L.W. Kersey of Drewryville, Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin and Dr. Hugh C. Smith of Drewryville. The many handsome floral designs and floral gifts expressed the esteem and love of her many friends. The honorary pallbearers were: Doctors J.M. Bland of Boykins, W.T. McLemore and E.F. Reese of Courtland, R.L. Raiford of Franklin, J.N. Applewhite of Capron, J.A. Grizzard of Drewryville, Lewis Rawles and J.E. Rawles of Suffolk and B.A. Pope of Newsoms. The body bearers were: W.B. Goodwyn, W.R. Sykes, R.D. Vick, Leon O. Tyler, Leon Wood, Jno. A. Harris, Aubrey Beale, S.T. Boothe, Wallace White, Hugh Knight, Hugh Powell and Felton Draper. Relatives who attended the funeral rites included Mrs. Priscilla Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. N.R. Sanderson and daughters of McCall, S.C., Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Hodge of Knightsdale, N.C., Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Foster of Norlina, N.C., Mrs. Roland Jones, North, Va., Mrs. Herbert Smith and son of Rocky Mount, N.C. and Dr. and Mrs. Richard Hodge of Severn, N.C. Among a large number of friends from a distance present were: Mrs. Geo. Spencer and Miss Vernon of South Mills, N.C., Rev. and Mrs. R.G. Kendrick and daughter, Miss Elizabeth Kendrick of Herford, N.C., Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Beasley, Colerain, N.C., Mrs. Hallie Baker, Mrs. Mary Green and Arthur Green of Ahoskie, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Underwood, Mrs. Herman Babb, Mrs. J. Anderson, Thomas Wynn, Mrs. Morgan Babb and J.D. Babb of Murfreesboro, N.C., Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Lifsey and Mrs. Frances Guthrie of Emporia. Besides these a host of friends from Severn and Margarettsville, N.C. and the towns and communities of Southampton County came to pay their last tribute of respect. [Fannie M. (HODGE; Mrs. John W.)
