SMITH, VETERAN BAPTIST MINISTER, DIES IN WEST VIRGINIA Dr. Hugh C. Smith of Drewryville died January 29 after an illness of six weeks at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Will Daniels of Huntington, West Virginia, with whom he and Mrs. Smith were spending the winter. Dr. Smith was born in Petersburg February 16, 1854. Studying in the schools of that city, he went to Richmond College where he received his bachelor's degree, and was later honored with the degree of Doctor of Divinity by that institution. He was a minister in the Baptist church for more than 50 years and was one of the most useful men in his denomination throughout Virginia. For 40 years he had been secretary of the Baptist General Association of the State, and had held many positions of honor in the organizations of the General Association. At the time of his death he was clerk of the Petersburg Association, Dr. Smith being one of the prime movers in the organization of that association in 1907. He had held a number of pastorates in this county, including Drewryville, Hebron, Adams Grove, Boykins, Newsoms and Courtland; at Emporia and other places in Virginia, and was widely known, esteemed and loved for his life of consecrated, intelligent and unusually useful Christian service. The body was brought to Drewryville for burial where the funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Thomas Memorial Church. Several ministers and other friends of Dr. Smith took part in the service, the Rev. George T. Tunstall of High Point, N.C., having charge of the service. Captain Perkinson of Petersburg told of his schooldays acquaintance with Dr. Smith, and W.M. Rucker of Petersburg, moderator of the Petersburg Association, spoke of his great service in that body and of the love and esteem in which he was held. Rev. Maurice Trimmer of Emporia read Dr. Smith's two favorite passages of the scripture and a third one appropriate to his life's work, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." Rev. Mr. Turstall concluded the service in the church in a splendid talk emphasizing Dr. Smith's life of love, loyalty and service, and the Rev. J. Sidney Cobb of Windsor, a former Drewryville pastor, had charge of the service at the grave. Rev. A.W. Coates, pastor of Thomas Memorial, represented the local church. Music by the church choir included: "How Firm a Foundation," "The Song of the Soul" and "Abide with Me." The pallbearers were nephews and great nephews of Mrs. Smith's: Amos, Beekman and Thomas Pope, J.W. Claud, Jno. T. Claud, Peter Thomas, J.B. Thomas of Emporia and Day Lowry of Richmond. A number of friends of the community acted as flower bearers. Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jennie Ivy Smith of Drewryville; his daughter, Mrs. Daniels and four grandchildren of Huntington, West Virginia, besides a host of friends in Drewryville and the community and throughout the entire State.
