A native of Southampton County he was better known as Jim Smith in the Handsom and Como communities, where he spent most of his life until the last 20 years spent in Portsmouth. Mr. Smith was the son of the late Shelton and Martha Anne Smith of Southampton County. He is survived by his wife, Annie Mary Smith; a foster daughter, Mrs. Edward R. Babb of Westhaven; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Whitley of Portsmouth, Mrs. G.A. Fowler of Handsom, and Mrs. Tom Councill of Gates, N.C., a number of nieces and nephews, and other relatives. Mr. Smith held membership in the Westhaven Baptist Church. His funeral was conducted by the Snellings Funeral Home on Sunday, June 6 by his pastor, the Rev. T.W. Page. The casket was covered with a spray of carnations and stocks, there were other beautiful floral pierces. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin. Pallbearers were: N.T. Haynes, A.H. Haynes, Jim Carroway, N.H. Phillips, H.G. Spady, A.E. Van Cannon, L.O. Taft and J. Holloman.
