SMITH Lyle Saunders Smith, 54, husband of Mrs. Mary Muse Campbell Smith of Franklin, died in the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond, on Tuesday afternoon, March 25, about 2:30 o’clock, after an illness of several weeks. He was born in Holland, Nansemond County, the son of the late Woodie Edward and Mrs. Lillian Saunders Smith. He was educated in the schools of Franklin and was graduated from Blackstone Military Academy. At the time of his death Mr. Smith was a police dispatcher for the town of Franklin and also a justice of the peace. He formerly operated a dairy farm in Isle of Wight County and for several years ran the Buick automobile agency in Franklin. He was president of the Carrsville Community Center and a former president of the Carrsville Ruritan Club. A leader in obtaining a community house for Carrsville, he was also active in Boy Scout work in that village. He was a member of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church and of Holly Camp, Woodmen of the World. Surviving are his wife; a son, Woodie Edward Smith, 2nd, also of Franklin; a sister, Mrs. Robert S. Lockhart, Jr., of Charlotte, N.C.; and a nephew. Services for Mr. Smith were conducted in the chapel of W.J.M. Holland & Sons this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by Rev. Tucker G. Humphries, pastor of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church, and Rev. Edwin C. Thornton, pastor of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Edwin Beale, Ryland H. Brooks, Marks Edwards, Jesse Harrison, William G. O’Brien, Ralph Poole, John Edward Rose, Jr., and W.S. Robertson.
