A lifelong resident of Southampton County and a farmer in the community, Mr. Smith was the husband of Mrs. Libby Davis Smith, and a son of the late Augustus and Mary Rose Smith. He was a member of the Branchville Baptist Church and of the Newsoms Lodge 128, A.F. & A.M. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Joyce Moriconi of Richmond and Mrs. Marguerite Cutchins of Boykins; a son, Godwin D. Smith of Ahoskie, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Callie Tyler and Mrs. Mary Webb, Both of Branchville; two half-brothers, Hersey Bolton of Boykins and Roscoe Bolton of Rich Square, N.C.; five grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Branchville Baptist Church by the pastor, Rev. Thomas Caulkins, assisted by Rev. William Ferguson, pastor of the Branchville Methodist Church. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers were H.T. Smith, Dr. J.J. Grizzard, Thomas Grizzard, Arthur Bryant, Collis Overby, Joseph W. Pope, David Sykes, Ernest Cutchins. Friends of the family served as honorary pallbearers Masonic rites were conducted at the graveside by the Newsom Lodge, A.F. & F.M.
