Smith of that town. Mrs. Smith, who was the daughter of the late Sheriff C.L. Grizzard of Courtland, was found by members of the family lying dead in the pantry of the home, having shot herself through the breast. No reason can be given for her act since the home life was happy and tranquil and in a message left by Mrs. Smith she stated that no one was to be blamed. Momentary mental depression is the only possible cause assigned by the family. Mrs. Smith was in her 28th year and is survived by her husband and two small daughters, Betty Mason and Frances Lee; three brothers, John Grizzard of Greensboro, N. C., David of Washington and Franklin of Courtland, and her stepmother, Mrs. Fannie Grizzard of Courtland. The burial took place at Courtland Monday afternoon, February 15, and was witnessed by many sorrowing friends. The services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Stiff, pastor of Ivor Methodist Church of which the deceased was a member. The hymns, "Home of the Soul" and "Sometime We’ll Understand" were sung. The pallbearers were F.S. Winn, L.C. Pulley, Otis Joyner, Jerome Raiford, Hugh Gillette and T.B. Bell. Miss Sallie and Annie Joyner, nurses at Sarah Leigh Hospital, Norfolk and John Grizzard and family of Greensboro, N.C., were among those from a distance to attend the burial. Lutie E.
