All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARTHA ANNE HOWELL SMITH Mrs. Martha Anne Smith, 79 years of age, wife of the late Shelton Smith, and daughter of the late Robert and Nancy Howell, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G.A. Fowler, at Handsom May 15, after a long illness. She is survived by one son, James Smith of Portsmouth; four daughters, Mrs. Annie Whitley of Murfreesboro, Mrs. G.A. Fowler, Mrs. W.T. Cogsdale and Mrs. Tom Councill of this community; 31 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from Sunbeam Baptist church of which she was a member, by the Pastor, Rev. L.E. Dailey, assisted by Rev. J.K. Holman of the Methodist Church and Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner, a former pastor of Mrs. Smith when she was a member of Como. The pallbearers were grandsons: Vernon, Wilbur, Garnett, Smith and Sam Whitley, Harry Fowler, Willie and George Cogsdale. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, the casket being covered with a pall of calla lilies and ferns. Mrs. Smith was born in Southampton County where she spent most of her life. A devoted mother of a genial and sunny disposition, she made many friends whenever she went - her children and grandchildren rise up and call her blessed. She was the last of a large family of brothers and sisters. Burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin.
