All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WOODIE EDWARD SMITH FUNERAL SERVICES FOR WOODIE SMITH ARE HELD MONDAY Funeral services for Woodie Edward Smith, a well-known citizen of this town, who died Sunday morning following a stroke of paralysis on January 2, were held from the Franklin Congregational Christian Church Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Dr. Elwood W. Jones, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church, conducted the services. Mr. Smith was born near Liberty Spring, Nansemond County, August 14, 1880, the son of the late George L. and Mrs. Martha Griffin Smith. He united with the Liberty Spring Christian Church at an early age but in later years, after he had come to make his home in this town, he moved his membership the Franklin Christian Church. On June 21, 1902, Mr. Smith married Miss Lillie Alberta Saunders of Nansemond County, who survives him. He moved to Franklin in 1912 and subsequently became engaged in the automobile business. In 1917 he secured the first local Ford agency in this town, which he retained for ten years until 1927. Mr. Smith was a man of many splendid traits of character and one whose genial nature endeared his to his many friends and associates. Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Lyle S. Smith, and a daughter, Mrs. E.A. Hatch, Jr., both of Franklin; two brothers, Arthur and Paul Smith, of Suffolk; and one sister, Mrs. Frances S. Ralph, of Liberty Spring, Nansemond County. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being Ray Boyette, of Scotland Neck, N.C.; W.M. Bradshaw, James L. Camp, Jr., Dr. Ashley Cutchin, W.H. Jones, S.W. Rawls, Dr. Burton J. Ray and C.C. Vaughan, 3rd. Members of the Men’s Bible Class of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church, of which Mr. Smith was a member, served as honorary pallbearers. Among those from out-on-town who attended the funeral were John Stewart, Saunders Parrish, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford McCloud, Mrs. Agnes Parrish of Washington; C.E. Vincent of Portsmouth; Theodore Griffin of Norfolk; Miss Dorothy Jones of Baltimore; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Boyette of Scotland Neck, N.C.; Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Hudson, Miss Jacqueline Hudson of Lawrenceville; Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Johnston, Elliott Johnston, R.H. Johnston of Holland; E.A. Hatch, Sr. of Wakefield; Herbert Hatch of Richmond; and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith, Miss Elizabeth Smith, George Smith, Mrs. J.J. Ralph and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Briggs of Suffolk.
