Lee Varner. Burial was in National Memorial Park, Falls Church, with Ives Funeral Home, Wilson Blvd., in charge. Pallbearers were E.C. Smith Jr., B.W. Smith, Gordon L. Smith, V. Brandon Smith, Dr. Richmond Karr, and Earle Byram. Smith, a personnel specialist with the Civil Service Commission, died Friday, May 22 at George Washington University Hospital. He lived at 5429 N. 23rd St., Arlington. A native of Franklin, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Smith and the husband of Mrs. Virginia Kaar Smith. An employee of the Civil Service commission since 1938, he was a graduate of Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church of Arlington. Surviving are his wife, the former Virginia Kaar, and a daughter, Kaarlyn of the home; a son, W. Randolph Smith, Lynchburg; three sisters, Mrs. George W. Goodwin Jr., Franklin, Mrs. E.S. Sheppe, Richmond, and Mrs. E.M. Babb, of Ivor; three brothers, E.C. Jr. and Gordon L., both of Richmond, and Bernard W. of Sedley, and two grandsons.
