All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM ELDRIDGE SMITH William Eldridge Smith, 86, of 104 Sycamore Rd., died Wednesday, November 2, 1983 in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, Va. after a long illness. He was a native of Dublin, Ga. and the son of the late Joseph Eldridge Smith and Carrie Belle Blackshear Smith. He was married July 7, 1927 to Elizabeth Fountain Camp in Franklin, Va. He attended Riverside Military Academy, Gainesville, Ga. and Emory College, Oxford, Ga., now Emory University, Atlanta, Ga. After living in Tampa, Fla. with his wife for several years, they moved on account of his health to Portland, Maine and lived several for six years before moving to Franklin, Va. in September 1948. He was in the insurance business in Franklin for several years, having represented very satisfactorily and happily, Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States until his retirement. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church and served on the Board of Deacons two different terms. He was a member since 1930 of the Tampa, Fla., Portland, Maine and Franklin, Va. Rotary Clubs. He was a past director of the Camp Foundation in Franklin. He is survived by his widow, Elizabeth Camp Smith of Franklin. A graveside funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, November 4, 1983 in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. Donald Dunlap. The family suggest that memorials be made to Southampton Academy, Courtland, Va. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, has charge of arrangements. ****************************************************************************** WILLIAM ELDRIDGE SMITH WILLIAM E. SMITH OF FRANKLIN DIES FRANKLIN - William Eldridge Smith, 86, a past director of the Camp Foundation philanthropic organization, died yesterday in Southampton Memorial Hospital. Mr. Smith worked for several years representing the Equitable Life Assurance Society in Franklin, to which he and his wife, Elizabeth Camp Smith, moved from Portland, Ore. The couple, who married in 1927, had also lived in Tampa, Fla. A native of Dublin, Ga., Mr. Smith attended Emory College in Oxford (now Emory University of Atlanta). He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church, where he had been on the board of deacons, and the Franklin Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife. A service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials donations be made to Southampton Academy in Courtland. ****************************************************************************** FRANKLIN - A funeral for William Smith, 86, was held Friday at 11 a.m. in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. Donald Dunlap. Wright Funeral Home was in charge. Smith died Wednesday in a hospital. A native of Dublin, Ga., he was the husband of Elizabeth Camp Smith.
