All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WARING WRIGHT SMITH Waring Wright Smith, 63, a native of Essex County and a resident of Franklin since 1912, died in Raiford Memorial Hospital early Sunday morning, September 7. He had been in ill health for the past two years. The deceased was the husband of Mrs. Lizzie Brownley Smith and son of the late John F. and Mrs. Ann Dillard Smith of Essex County. A veteran of World War I, he entered the grocery business in Franklin in 1913 with his brother George Gregory Smith, and continued in this business until his death. Although in an enfeebled condition, he persisted in working in the store until -------*. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Jane S. Dunlap of Plainview, Minn., and Miss Mary Brownley Smith of Franklin; one son, Waring Wright Smith, Jr., of Wakefield; three grandchildren; one brother, George Gregory Smith of Franklin; one sister, Mrs. Dan S. Jones of Williamsburg. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Emmanuel Episcopal Church by Rev. John M. Gessell, followed by burial in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The pallbearers were George D. Brownley, Dan S. Jones, Jr., George G. McCann, Prentice P. Smith, George O. Watkins and J. Edgar Weede. *Line through part.
