William Shands, former State Senator and Commonwealth's Attorney, and one of the best-known citizens of this county, died of pneumonia at Staunton, Va., Tuesday, March 14, in his fifty-ninth year. Mr. Shands was the only child of the late General W.B. Shands of this county and was a great-grandson of President John Tyler. He was twice married, his first wife being the daughter of the late Dr. T.J. Pretlow, and his second wife, the oldest daughter of Mr. J. William Ridley of the county, who survived him with three children, W.R. Shands of Richmond and Misses Letitia and Bessie Shands of Courtland. The deceased practiced law in Southampton for more than thirty years and before his health failed had been a prominent and useful citizen. He was taken to Staunton for treatment a few days ago, dying with pneumonia soon after his arrival there. The body was brought to Courtland for interment and funeral services were conducted from the Shands residence by Rev. Winfield Shiers of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, of which the deceased was a loyal communicant. The active pallbearers, all members of the Southampton bar, were E. Frank Story, R.E.L. Watkins, Claude J. Edwards, Barclay Pretlow, Jno. C. Parker, E.L. Beale, Jas. T. Gillette, C.W. Davis. The honorary pallbearers included a number of personal friends and there were many beautiful floral tributes. Interment was made in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery. Hon. William M.
