Happenings of This and Adjoining Counties. COURTLAND LETTER. Death of Gen. Shands--Circuit Court Bold Robbery--Social News. Gen. Wm. B. Shands, an aged and honored citizen of this town, died at his residence here Tuesday night. Gen. Shands has been sick for a considerable time and his death was not unexpected, but his family and friends are nevertheless greatly grieved at his demise. His remains will be buried Thursday afternoon in the Riverside Cemetery at this place. A bold robbery occurred here Monday night. Robbers entered the residence of Mr. Cola Grizzard and stole $35 and a valuable gold watch. The robbers also stole a few small articles from the residence of Mr. W.N. Sebrell, and made an unsuccessful attempt to enter Mr. E. Whitfield's residence. The regular July term of Circuit Court convened here Monday, Judge R.R. Prentis, presiding. No cases of more than passing importance were disposed of and court adjourned on Wednesday on account of the death of General Shands. Miss Annie Hart of Pinopolis is visiting Misses Evie, Mamie and Florence Williams. Miss Belle Webb of Petersburg is spending several days with Mrs. Wm. Shands. Miss Irma Sebrell is the guest of Miss Myrtle Sebrell in Norfolk. We are glad to state that Senator Shands and son Will, who have been quite sick with malarial fever, are improving. Miss Bessie Williams left here yesterday for a visit to friends at Enfield. Misses Lizzie Gillette, of Worrell's and Ama [sic; Anna] Gillette of Isaac, are visiting Mrs. Walter Bryant in this place. Gen. His wife Letitia Christian (TYLER) SHANDS (1844 - 1863) was a granddaughter of President John TYLER. She is buried with her mother in the HINES family cemetery, "Poplar Grove."
