M. SIMMONS Alonzo [sic*] May Simmons died September 4, 1919, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. May Reese, at Sebrell, Va., after being afflicted for some time with paralysis and high blood pressure. He was a devoted husband and a loving father, was always kind and did all he could for the pleasure of his family as long as his health permitted. He was a kind neighbor and was loved by all who knew him. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and attended its services so long as his health permitted. He was born November 1, 1847, and was married to Miss Annie Briggs January 16 [sic; 14*], 1878. He leaves to survive him a wife and four children, Mrs. L.M. Reese of Sebrell, Mrs. F.T. Parker of Sussex Courthouse, Mrs. E.F. Johnson of Littleton, Sussex county, and W.B. Simmons of Norfolk, eighteen grandchildren, one brother, Mr. Charlie Simmons of Branchville, two sisters, Mrs. R.T. Spain of Sussex, Mrs. John Smith of Dendron and a host of relatives and friends. He was buried at the old Simmons burying ground at Sebrell. The services were read at the grave by Rev. W.L. Burks of Courtland. The active pallbearers were J.T. Rowe, B.G. Simmons, N.F. Hargrave, A.T. Simmons, M.P. Little and A.E. Briggs; honorary, L.M. Cobb, G.B. Briggs, D.E. Parker, L.T. Reese, Dr. E.B. Kilby, S.V. Camp and C.W. Vinson. A profusion of lovely flowers from his children, relatives and friends completely covered the grave where this good man rests in peace.
