Mr. Simmons was born in Southampton County in 1865, where he lived until his death. Fourteen years ago he underwent a very serious operation and eleven years ago was critically ill for three months. He was never very strong from then until his death, but worked and looked after his business until February of this year. He gradually grew worse and finally consented to another operation which proved fatal after weeks of intense suffering. All that doctors, nurses, family and friends could do was done to relieve his suffering but to no avail. He born his affliction bravely without a murmur, and fought hard to get well. His two sons H.B. Simmons of Suffolk and R.W. Simmons of Boykins were with him when the end came. His wife, who had been with him during his entire sickness having broken down on Saturday just a few hours before he passed away. The body was forwarded to Boykins accompanied by his wife, Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Simmons of Suffolk, Mrs. Eva Rogers of Portsmouth, Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Webb of Gloucester and R.W. Simmons of Boykins.
