All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ LEE LAFAYETTE THORPE NEWSOMS - A funeral service for Lee Lafayette Thorpe, 90, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Barnes United Methodist Church by the Revs. Arthur W. Green, Harry Bunch and Kenneth Williams. McDowell Funeral Home has charge. Thorpe died Thursday in a hospital. A native of Southampton County, he was a member of the Southampton County Board of Supervisors from 1952 to 1956. He had served as director of Meherrin Valley Bank, Tidewater Bank and Trust Co., and Virginia National Bank. Thorpe was director of Peanut Growers Cooperative from 1935 to 1955. He was a member of the Virginia Peanut Growers Commission and the Peanut Growers Association. He was a member and trustee of Barnes United Methodist Church and its parsonage. He was a charter member of Newsoms Ruritan Club and a past master and 63-year member of Newsoms Masonic Lodge 128. Thorpe was a farmer and was an Army veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife, Reba Collier Thorpe; two daughters, Lynda Lee Updike of Newsoms; and Reba Faye Connell of Sanford, N.C.; a sister, Carrie T. Vick of Newsoms, and four grandchildren.
