ROLAND VANCE THORPE

   NEWSOMS - A graveside funeral service for Roland Vance Thorpe, 77, who 
died Tuesday afternoon in a Newport News hospital, after a long illness, was 
conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Thorpe family cemetery, near Newsoms.

   Pallbearers were: R.E. Drake, Jr., Joe Everett, Thomas Darden, Harry 
Barrett Jr., John B. Thorpe Jr., and J.T. Parker.

   A native of Southampton County, he was a son of Thomas Wesley and Mrs. 
Martha Darden Thorpe.  He was a member of the Barnes United Methodist Church, 
and a retired farmer.

   Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Mary Alice Bryant and Mrs. Carrie T. Vick, 
one brother Lee L. Thorpe, all of Newsoms and a number of nieces and nephews.

   McDowell Funeral Home, Boykins was in charge of arrangements.
